Friday 3rd of August, The worst hitchhiking day ever.

I don't know do I have to tell anymore of that day. If I could go back in time I would have taken the bus from Riva del Garda back to Trento and tried to HH there.

Mika:
We were on the west side of Garda lake on the only road leading South with a sign for South. We got the first ride from a father and son after a longer wait that usually.

The son had been in Sailing school and graduated that day. They owned a villa or summer house on the mountains near Limone du Garda. They were from germany but spoke perfect english. I asked had they learned also Italian as they had the villa there, but no. The father ironically said that eventhough he owned the place for almost twenty years he hasn't learned any Italian. He told us that near the Garda there are a lot of German people and the shops also know Deutch so he didn't have to. I was again sad that I had stopped my german classes at basic level, as most of the places we visited in Garda didn't speak too good english. If I have time I will continue it soon.

They dropped us of at the center of the small village at a place where cars slow down and there was a possibility to stop on a wider place on the road. We stood in the sun for too long. Janina was getting frustrated as we didn't get a ride for a longer time than before. It was also a really hot day. I tried to suggest a couple of times for her to go and pick us up some icecream and lemonade to no vein.

Well we ended up going together as we desided the place wasn't good after all and it would be better to find a place with some trees providing some shadows. We walked through the village, got some water from a hotel and near the edge found trees on the roadside providing cover. It wasn't as good a place to HH as the cars didn't have any space to stop at. But Italians parked where ever they saw fit so it wasn't a problem.

And so it wasn't we got our next ride after another half an hour when Luis came to save us. He was driving a big Volvo and thought it was made in Finland. Well I think there has been some factories of Volvo in Finland but its swedish. He liked his car alot eventhough it was ten years old but a really good model. We had another small language barrier but Finnish and Italian bodylanguage filled the gaps.

Luis took us to a good HH place next to the Autobahn payment booths towards Milano. We stood there not too long until "a man in a van" took us. He spoke some english and we got a ride to almost half way to Milano. He also dropped us on the road payment booth and it seemed a good place to HH as the people need to slow down. We got another ride soon from a small pickup truck driver that had worked in Kotka Finland. He had some concrete(beton) devises at the back. We were hoping that we remebered to close all the pockets of our bags before heading to the autobahn again as our bags were out in the open on the back.

We got into a bit of an argument with Janina. I felt that she should have helped more with explaining where to get of as the driver didnt understand english but french was his native language. Well sorry for that. Again the real reason was hunger as we had HHed the day without proper food yet. This time we dropped out near a autobahn gasstation with the help of N9 maps that were international. We jumped a fence to get to the station. I helped Janina over as she didn't seem that much into parkour at that point. (And I have told many times I really can't speak French, I might understand it a bit, but it's hard to speak it if you haven't done it for a long time..)

We went in to the stations restaurant to eat and after eating we got outside an back to HHing.

After almost four hours we got a ride from a nice family to the center of Milano as nobody took us to Milano South or other cities on our HH carton. It seemed that we ran out of luck for a while.

We ended up sleeping at the Central railwaystation of Milano.

The funniest thing happened. We were looking for a toilet or shower, following the signs. We came to the entrance but there was a metal net stopping our way. We went to ask one of the security guards "Why can't we get to the toilet at that time. Were people only allowed to go for a leak in Milano between 8am to 10pm?" The guard aswered he didn't know why its closed. Well, he couldn't speak so good english. When I added to Mika's question that "ofcourse they only sleep then, right?", the guard just laughed and agreed. Then we asked is there any restaurant, eating place, somewhere and he showed with his hand to right explaining at the same time "go left". And he had a gun. Hope to newer see him trying to stop somebody with "You on the left side stop or I shoot"

You can actually sleep at the station as long as you've got the ticket. Janina was sure that it's better to take the ticket and sleep at the station until the next train towards France. Than to go look for another place to HH at night or morning. Well the next one was 7:25 and we had to eat and sleep before that.

We went for dinner at a Italian restaurant that was held by the Chinese. Did some blogging, Tried to send a post and got back at the station. We found an okay spot to sleep at behind the ticket machines. Janina blew the water matress and fell asleep quickly.

I woke up almost hourly. First one of the guards came to tell me with Italian English to look after our bags there has been thefts at the station. After that almost hourly another guard came to tell me the same thing. They were changing shifts often or just routes they walk at. Then morning sift came and was anxious to tease some one. They came to us and woke me up and told me we would have to sleep in the benches but the floor wasn't ok. Well at that point I didn't care. I just told them that we would move and continued trying to sleep. The next time he came it was almost time for us to wake up for the train and Janina woke up also,

so we got up and packed up our stuff.
